History

In 1971, Bill Butterfield built an indoor tennis facility on Lynch Road, on the northwest side of town near the airport. In analyzing the future growth patterns and demographic changes in Evansville, he decided the east side of town would become more dynamic and more developed, and so decided to join forces with Tennis Corporation of American to build a new club off Green River Road. Based out of Chicago, TCA is a health club industry leader boasting over 40 clubs nationwide. Over the years, the marriage between TSAC and TCA was a good one.

Gym Evansville Newburgh, IndianaOver the past 35 years, Tri-State Athletic Club has continued to grow, to upgrade the facilities, to provide innovative services and to accommodate member’s needs. The club added the opportunity for members to swim in the winter by putting a bubble over the pool. In 1982, TSAC converted two indoor tennis courts to a fitness center with an indoor track. Four more outdoor tennis courts were added, and two were “bubbled” for winter use. A concession stand was added beside the pool bathhouse, and an outdoor court was converted to a mini-basketball court (now a playground area) and a seating area for the concessions stand.

In 1985, the club remodeled a racquetball court into a Sun Center tanning salon and a conference room. Winners Club was added in November 1996. The men’s and women’s locker rooms were upgraded in 1987 with new carpeting and wallpaper. An “exer-flex” aerobics floor was also installed in 1987.

From November 1988 through February 1989, we completed a $350,000 fitness center expansion and lobby renovation. Two tennis courts were converted into basketball/volleyball courts; the track size was increased to 10 laps to the mile, making it the largest indoor track in the area; the Nautilus equipment was repainted and reupholstered; and new Kaiser equipment, free weights, and Stairmasters were added. In 1990, a room in the Sun Center was converted into a massage room and TSAC began offering Muscle Restorative Therapy.

In the spring of 1991, a new rubber deck was added to the pool area and new pool slides and playground equipment were installed. In 1992, Cybex modular equipment was introduced to the fitness center. In the spring of 1993, “Cardio-Theater” was installed on all cardiovascular equipment along with treadmills and recumbent bicycles. In the summer of 1993 three outdoor courts were renovated and resurfaced.

December of 1998 saw the opening of a brand new Aerobics Studio with a vari-cushioned floor system. During the same period, the fitness center received a total facelift; the free weight areas double in size and more cardio equipment was installed.

In October of 1999, the Kids’ Club renovation began. Opening in January 2000, the new Kids’ Club is 3 times the size of the original nursery. Construction continued on with the addition of a new tennis dome, expansion of the free weight and cardio areas, renovation of the men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, additional showers, relocation and redesign of lobby and front desk areas, relocations of the restaurant and office, new fitness and aquatic equipment, and new spa amenities including a wet steam, new whirlpools, dry saunas all located within each of the locker rooms. Tri-State Athletic Club’s Grand Re-Opening was held in November 2000 after completing a $2 million renovation.

A fire in the men’s sauna in September 2007 resulted in temporary closing of TSAC. Within four days the club reopened across the street from the main building. During this period of time Bill Butterfield and TCA sold TSAC to a group of local investors. Don Martin is current General Manager/Partner of TSAC.
